People, especially educators, often discuss whether colleges provide success coaches for students. By reading article in American culture class, I became to think about coaches in university. I strongly believe that university should provide coaches because they can help students more effectively that can find the right services quelling college fears and be motivated.
In the article, coaches in university can help students who have college fears. As everyone knows, students from high school feel college fears when they are going to college at first. It is natural problem for students because university is new place that first year students never have been and experiences. However, coaching services are effective way of solution for this problem. For example, James Madison University where I’m attending has also similar services with the coaching service for first year students. JMU has summer orientations before attending classes for students and family. They have frogs system which brings underprepared students up to speed academically and less feel fears. Frogs are consists of JMU student who volunteer for first year students. They guide students to know JMU buildings and student support services, such as academic advisers and many centers that can be helpful not only during orientation but until students adapt new circumstances. In this way, it illustrates the importance of couching services.
As students have conversation with couches, they more likely to be motivated. Of course, having conversation with couches is not the only way of getting motivation from university, but it is the effective way of doing so. When first year students come to university and adapt life of university, they need academic sources to success in classes. I think that it is good way that university begins first semester by working with their coaches to figure out their academic and personal goals. Even during the semester, students can ask help to couches if they want to change major or goal and have academic or personal problem. During students’ midterm crisis, couches also encourage them to not give up classes and degree. In this way, couching services can be related to motivate students.
Taking all of these things into account, college should provide coaches that enable first year students to gain the right services in university and be motivated their academic goals.
